Key Legal and Safety Requirements
• Petrol must only be kept in containers meeting the standards outlined in Schedule 3 of the Petroleum (Consolidation) Regulations 2014 (secure closures, appropriate materials, clear labelling).
• For workplaces: A suitable and sufficient DSEAR risk assessment must be completed and reviewed regularly to control fire and explosion risks.
• Storage areas must provide adequate ventilation and be separated from ignition sources. Petrol must never be stored in living accommodation.
• Appropriate fire-fighting equipment and spill containment measures should be in place.
• Non-compliance may lead to enforcement action, including prohibition notices, fines, or prosecution.
