Training & Development Academy

At the TDA we boast facilities to rival those of any Fire and Rescue Service in the country and indeed any training facility, anywhere, including conference and teaching rooms and a 60-seat lecture theatre, all with fully interactive IT facilities.

The fire training house was one of the first purpose-built breathing apparatus training venues in the country and to this day provides an excellent facility enabling firefighters to train with live fire scenarios. The practical training facilities also include a state-of-the-art, realistic fire training building and a wide range of outdoor training facilities.

The recent additions of a trench rescue simulator, confined space tunnels, search and rescue dog training area and Urban Search And Rescue (USAR) rig provide comprehensive facilities to train people from within the Fire and Rescue Service and colleagues from other emergency services in the very latest search and rescue techniques. We are confident that we have the facilities and the expertise to provide realistic training for the wide variety of incidents firefighters may be expected to attend.

We offer high quality training to the commercial sector in fire and emergency-related preparedness. This training helps our customers to plan and prepare and helps their business continuity.

We work closely with all MFRS youth engagement programmes, offering a wide range of activities which provide stimulating and rewarding activities for young people from all social backgrounds.

Operational training for firefighters and officers falls into five broad categories and the staff at the TDA design and deliver initial and refresher training in these areas across our operational response workforce. The below pages give further detail about each of these categories.

While our current facilities are impressive, we are currently building a state of the art training facility and multi-pump superstation which will be completed in 2024.
