The LIFE course is designed to engage with young people (age 8-25) during the school holidays, with the aim of offering positive activities to direct people away from anti-social behaviour.
This course can be adapted depending on the needs and ages of the client, from a one day taster day, to a one week course. Participants on each course will be of a similar age. The course is run during school holiday periods, in a number of fire service premises.
Course Activities
Depending on the duration of the course, activities may include:
- Practical Fire Service Activities (Hose Drills/Youth Breathing Apparatus/Hydrant Drills/Foam Making Equipment/Search & Rescue Techniques)
- Teambuilding, Energiser & Communication Tasks
- Outdoor Pursuits
- Community Safety Awareness (Safety in the Home/Fire Escape Plans/Arson/Bonfire & Fireworks Safety/ASB)
- First Aid, Health Awareness
- Child Exploitation/Healthy Relationships
- Road Safety/Water Safety
- End of Course Certificate Presentation
Aim
- Provide safe, fun, enriching and unique experiences
- Giving students the opportunity to take part in a learning experience outside of the school or peer group environment
- Create a therapeutic environment, with trauma informed practices to promote engagement
- The course is delivered with the aim of encouraging self-development of the students by instilling fundamental Fire Service principles of self-discipline, leadership and teamwork
- To develop healthy relationships & growth mindset
- Improve personal, social & educational development
Objective
- To engage with young people and give them something positive to do during school holidays
- Positive engagement with a uniformed service
- Gain certification
Course Details
- The course can be facilitated at a number of fire stations, subject to availability and suitability
- The course starts at 10am and concludes at 2.30pm. Transport will be provided to pick up/drop off students from school. A packed lunch will be provided
- There is a maximum of 12 students per course, with a ratio of 2 instructors
- LIFE Courses are only available subject to securing external funding and staff availability during school holidays
